Dana Shaffer - Full Bio:
Dana has owned businesses in both the Tourism industry and Traffic Safety. She has worked in retail, tourism and the restaurant industry often at the same time until 1987 when she started for a locally owned company, Safety Systems Hawaii. From then she found a passion for Traffic and Safety and a mentor that would force her to push her boundaries. During this time she developed from a Purchasing Clerk to the President of Safety Systems Hawaii. Other roles she has held are VP of Operations and General Manager. During this time, she purchased a small tour business, and gave a two-year notice of her intention to run it full time in 2008. The business was successfully operating with other employees on the weekday and her on the weekends.
In 2007 the owners met with her to announce the intention to sell Safety Systems and the need for her to remain on due to her experience and knowledge of the business. She decided it was her duty to support the owner as he had her, and sold her tour business assets and accounts, staying on until the end of 2011.
In 2012 she left Safety Systems and in March of 2012 she started her own business Road Safety Services and Supplies LLC, which started with two people, friends and family. Over the next seven years the business grew from a staff of two to just under 50 employees. In 2019 she was approved to sell, and she sold Road Safety to Safety Systems Hawaii and returned with her employees to be the GM/President. They sold again in 2021 and she parted with what was now Statewide Safety Systems in August of 2022.
She focused on other opportunities unrelated to traffic control and safety, taking advantage of new opportunities to work with leadership and teams at a locally owned company. Focus being centered on building structure, while assisting the development of various programs within the organization. During this time, she began laying the groundwork and created Hawaii Worksite Service & Supplies, a women owned DBE. In Jan of 2024 she added traffic control services and personal protective equipment to her list of products and services.
After years of experience, she recognizes that it is the relationships and contributions of staff in the organization that make the company successful. It creates an environment staff want to support and ride out the rough times at, which in turn is a large piece of creating a successful business.
HWSS is 100% women owned, while it continues to be a challenge as a woman-owned company in the construction services business, the relationships and support keeps it a passion and something she is proud to be a part of. Her goal is to continually grow in the right way and create a path for others to succeed in this industry, provide an environment for staff to learn, grow, contribute and to stay in Hawaii.
